Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about metal detection, magnetometer readings, and using Flux.
About Flux
Flux is a professional-grade metal detector and magnetometer app for iPhone. It uses your phone's built-in magnetometer sensor to detect magnetic fields, locate hidden metals, and measure magnetic flux density in real time with microtesla precision.
Flux is free to download with core detection features including real-time gauge, haptic feedback, and basic readings. Advanced features like 3-axis analysis, scan recording, and data export are available through a subscription or one-time purchase.
Flux works on iPhone 4s and later models, which include a built-in magnetometer sensor. For the best experience and most accurate readings, we recommend iPhone 8 or later.
Yes. All sensor data is processed locally on your device. Flux does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data or measurement results. No accounts required.
Metal Detection
Flux reads your iPhone's magnetometer sensor, which measures magnetic flux density in microteslas (uT). Metallic objects — especially ferrous metals like iron, steel, and nickel — distort the Earth's magnetic field. Flux detects these distortions and provides real-time visual, numerical, and haptic feedback.
Flux is most effective at detecting ferromagnetic metals like iron, steel, and nickel. It can also detect other metals that create magnetic distortions, including some alloys. Non-ferrous metals like aluminum and copper are harder to detect with a magnetometer.
Flux uses your iPhone's built-in sensor, which is effective for everyday tasks like finding studs, nails, and hidden wires. While it won't replace industrial equipment, it's a surprisingly capable tool for home projects, DIY renovations, and general detection.
Yes. Flux detects the nails and screws that hold wall studs in place. Move your phone slowly along the wall surface and watch for spikes in the magnetic field reading. The haptic feedback will intensify when you pass over a stud location.
Using the App
Yes. Flux works completely offline. It reads directly from your device's magnetometer sensor hardware and does not require an internet connection for any of its core features.
Standard phone cases (silicone, plastic, leather) do not significantly affect magnetometer readings. However, magnetic cases, MagSafe accessories, or cases with metal components may interfere with accuracy. For best results, remove magnetic accessories.
Microtesla (uT) is the unit of magnetic flux density. Earth's natural magnetic field is typically 25-65 uT. Readings significantly above or below the local baseline indicate the presence of a magnetic source — such as metal objects, electrical wires, or electronic devices.
Flux can detect metal objects near the surface when used directly on the ground. Detection depth depends on the size and type of the metal object. For deep underground detection, professional equipment is recommended.
